My career has moved between two closely connected worlds: healthcare practice and professional education. Research has been an important thread through both.
I spent seven years working clinically as a physiotherapist across NHS teaching hospitals and private practice before moving into higher education.
Over the following decade, my work expanded across healthcare education, assessment, curriculum development, programme leadership, quality enhancement and research.
Across those roles, I repeatedly encountered the same issue: healthcare professionals are expected to develop capabilities that are central to safe and effective practice — judgement, communication, reflection, leadership, evaluation and professional credibility — yet many of these expectations are learned informally, inconsistently or simply left unexplained.
Core & Oak grew from a desire to make that professional development more explicit, useful and accessible to healthcare professionals.
I do not believe professional development should tell experienced professionals what to think.
It should give them better ways to examine their practice, articulate their judgement, learn from experience and decide what they want to develop next.
